Matilde is Paralyzed with Pain
You can Help Her Heal

Dearest Friends & Supporters of Ohki, Amalia & Red Wind Councils,

We’re earnestly asking for your help for a young indigenous woman in Chiapas, Matilde, who from a very early age was given the responsibility to walk long distances to harvest firewood for her family & haul it home on her back. It’s a very common practice in the rural regions of Chiapas where everyone in the family has a role in its support.

As the eldest of 9 children, she was also often carrying an even younger brother or sister on her back, doing hand laundry & hunting up & down mountain trails for the precious firewood needed for her impoverished family. She has suffered all her life from back pain resulting from the many hardships & falls of her childhood.

Today as a young woman, Matilde is in constant pain that has only grown worse over the decades with intermittent paralysis arising in the past year – an alarming debilitation that makes it impossible to reliably work to support herself.

As you know, healthcare in Chiapas can be treacherous for indigenous people outside their communities. Especially for those who are most impoverished, like Matilde.

Fortunately, Ohki, Amalia & Red Wind Councils have helped her to finally receive an accurate diagnosis at last, find an effective healthcare provider & begin a targeted treatment program which is already beginning to help Matilde.

HOWEVER, these steps have required lots of travel, xrays, consults & tests. This has wiped out their resources in Chiapas & exhausted Red Wind’s Medical Aid Fund.

We need your help!

Please donate to support Matilde – a brave, resourceful woman now in her 20’s, who is strong in spirit & determined to surmount this paralysis in her life.

We are raising $2,300 to make possible her weekly treatments over the next 6 months for her vertebral compression at L-5 with a pinched nerve. With treatment she has a high likelihood of full recovery from the damage caused by the difficult burdens she faced at such an early age.

Red Wind provides financial, legal, cultural, medical & spiritual assistance when needed. We believe that all problems need to be addressed in an integral way & not simply looking at the superficial causes but we try to resolve in common agreement the roots of all the issues. Every peso you donate counts. We have seen people doing a lot with little, the Maya are so ingenious.

All our work at Red Wind is voluntary & aimed at helping the Maya indigenous who knock at our doors at the Red Wind centers of Chiapas. We do so with heart & with the consciousness of what everyone needs. We do not impose our vision but work with the people to find what will serve the most effectively & graciously.

To this effect, besides the many self-sustainable projects we have, Ohki has created 2 Medicine Centers in Chiapas to offer spiritual renewal of the Maya & people of all backgrounds where she offers sacred ceremonies & Vision Quest retreats.

The people we serve have suffered over 500 years of utmost discrimination & trauma. The Maya, now left in absolute illiteracy & misery, have their ancient origins in people who had one of the most precise cosmologies & highly advanced spirituality. Yet the living Maya today greatly need our help. Please help make the Wheel of Life turn for the healing of the First Wound of the Americas.
